Natural Disaster Threatens Villages and Cemetery in Ilto Valley

December 1, 2008

Residents of the villages of Shakhvatila, Chachkhriala, Vedzebsa and Chartala, Akmeta District are asking for immediate assistance. They have informed the Human Rights Center that the forests of these villages have been actively clear cut the last few years. As a result, they claim that soil in several places of valley has eroded and mud and slips have covered the road.

The inhabitants of Ilto Valley say that they know from specialists that heavy rain and snow is not the only reason the landslide occurred. They say that landslide threatens Ilto valley villages as well as its cemetery. All the villages and the cemetery might all end up in the river.

There are cracks on the Ilto valley houses that are caused by natural disaster. Some houses were even destroyed by natural disaster. The locals have applied to the local government several times. However, no one was interested.

Trucks with more than 40 tons of wood leave Ilto valley every day. The locals say that no one inspects the legality of tree cut down in the Ilto valley.
