State Buses no longer running in Kakheti

December 1, 2008

State buses have stopped operating in Kakheti Region. The representatives of Kakheti government said that the decision was made because the buses are not carrying enough passengers and costs are outweighing profits.

“The Dutch buses require much fuel. The bus ticket is cheap and does not compensate the expenses needed to for their operation. As a result, municipal transport is no longer working in the region,” explained the Gurjaani District Governor’s Office.

The local government bought the Dutch-made buses before the elections earlier this year as part of an attempt to win over the support of voters. About 100,000 GEL was allocated form Kakheti District budgets for their purchase; however, such a social function proved unsustainable in the final analysis.
