International Day of Human Rights Celebrated in Georgian-Abkhazian Conflict Zone

On December 10 at the initiative of EU Monitoring Mission there was a celebration of the International Day of Human Rights in Zugdidi.  The event was organized in the Cinema “Atriumi” – the Human Rights Center, and a non-governmental organization “I Am Human” and Zugdidi Independent University were co-organizers of the event which was held in the format of a conference. Students and representatives of local NGOs attended the conference. Following the speeches of organizers a discussion was opened with various questions presented by those in attendance. A short documentary film was shared about conflict situations that exist between Israel and Palestine. The film revealed human relationships between the rival sides of the conflict. 

Wolgan Shafer, deputy head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Zugdidi introduced the guests with the goals of their mission that has been implementing in the conflict zone since October 1. Shafer stated that 70 observers from Italy, Germany, Check Republic and Lithuania are working in Zugdidi office of the EU.

Wolgan Shafer, EUMM Zugdidi Office: “We would like to contribute to the establishment of stability and trust in the area of our observation. Our aim has been to get in touch with locals. Five departments are working in our office and one of them monitors the human rights situation in the conflict zone. The objectives of this group is to observe free transportation across Georgian-Abkhazian administrative border and the look at the conditions faced by internally displaced people and to monitor the re-settlement of these people in the zone and all legal norms be preserved. We hope that our mandate will be completed in this way.”

Representatives of the Georgian Public Defender’s Office in Zugdidi and Human Rights Center introduced conference participants with their activities in the region.
