Zakaria Kutsnashvili, the head of non-governmental organization Law for People, considers that professor Omar Kutsnashvili, his father, was arrested because he (Zakaria Kutsnashvili) actively protested the activities of the Georgian government.
Zakaria Kutsnashvili stated at the press conference on January 22, 2009 that Omar Kutsnashvili was called from the office of the National Movement on December 22, 2007 and asked to go to the party office. However, Omar Kutsnashvili did not go to the National Movement’s office. “My father was called on December 24 again and was demanded to explain why he had not gone to their office. He explained that he never visited offices of political parties,” recalls Zakaria Kutsnashvili.
He said that there could be only two reasons why Omar Kutsnashvili was invited to the office of National Movement – either he would have been required to bring money as a donation or he would have been demanded that his son stopped criticizing the government publicly.
“There might be the third reason too: maybe the National Movement treated my father this way because he was actively involved in the protest demonstrations of 2007-2008. In particular, Omar Kutsnashvili ensured the involvement of the representatives of scientific-technical sphere in protests. He did not hide his critical sentiments towards the government,” said Zakaria Kutsnashvili.
Kutsnashvili spoke the details of his meeting with Zurab Adeishvili, former Prosecutor General at the press conference. “I met Zurab Adeishvili after the registration deadline of single mandate MP nominees was expired. I asked him not to punish my family members because of my political activities. He promised me that this would not happen again. The investigation against my father was ceased after our conversation. The equipment of my father’s company that had been confiscated by the Financial Police was returned,” said Kutsnashvili.
However, Omar Kutsnashvili was still arrested after a while.
