Regional Newspaper Demands Explanations from the Kakheti Regional Governor

January 26, 2009

Kakheti regional newspaper „Imedi“ requests explanations from Kakheti Regional Governor. The newspaper wonders whether the governor had really ordered the head of Gurjaani Police Department to insult and threaten journalists in order to intimidate them (journalists).

“Mister Governor, have you given similar orders?” It was the title of the article of Gela Mtivlishvili that was published in January 22, 2009 issue of the Imedi newspaper.

“Ghviniashvili, Kakheti regional governor, preserves old tradition of previous governors “to interfere in everybody’s business. He protected the head of Gurjaani police department, who was drunk and insulted and threatened journalists with planting drugs on us. “I do not interfere in the activities of law enforcers,” stated Ghviniashvili very seriously in his interview with radio “Hereti”.

Regarding the facts of insulting journalists, hooliganism and power abusing of the head of police department Ghviniashvili had indifferent attitude – he does not interfere in it. Nevertheless, we would like to ask the governor: “Mr. Giorgi, I am not a hostage of a political regime because you cannot supervise those media sources where I work for. I have right to request explanations from you: what is your connection with insulting and threatening of journalists; more precisely, did you personally order the police official to act in similar way?”

Nobody comments regarding the issue at the administration of regional governor. “We will read the article and if we consider it is necessary to reply to it we will do it,” said Mari Shashviashvili, PR manager of the governor’s administration.
