Georgian Public Defender’s Office Started Investigation of Oppression on Journalists

January 28, 2009

Several days ago the representatives of the Georgian Public Defender’s office met those journalists in Kakheti Region who were insulted and threatened with arrest by Soso Martashvili, the head of Gurjaani Police when journalists were implementing their professional duties on January 7, 2009.

The Ombudsman’s office has started investigation of the facts of insulting and threatening of journalists.

Last week Sozar Subari, the Public Defender of Georgia, made the statement about the incident. Subari considers the incident as a continuation of governmental policy against journalists and thinks that Soso Martashvili, the head of the police should leave the position immediately.
