Thousands of Farmers in Kakheti Might Be Left Without Gardens

March 8, 2009

Thousands of farmers in Kakheti might be left without their gardens. Kakheti News Center was reported that farmers cannot buy the plots that belong to the state, though they have been cultivating them for many years and have fruit-gardens there.

Farmers reported that Kakheti Regional Department of Privatization has stopped assignment of plots to farmers for a year already. The reason for that, as Vano Petriashvili, the head of the department, said, are verbal directions from the Ministry of Economical Development. Farmers claim high-ranking officials are eager to purchase land in Kakheti. So, although all technical issues are arranged on assigning the plots, farmers still cannot buy the land.

Vano Petriashvili confirms that plots on state land are not sold to farmers because of verbal directions from the Ministry of Economical Development.
