Opposition Is Persecuted in Zugdidi

April 9, 2009

In Zugdidi, patrol policemen destroyed the newspapers of the political party “Alliance for Georgia”.

Nana Toloraia, the head of the Zugdidi HQ of the political party, informed the Human Rights Center about the incident. She stated that soon after the incident a man in civilian dress arrived at the scene of the incident by black car with the statelicense  number “SDS 591” and beat several activists. “This man beat our boys and cursed the girls. The girls were scared and they rant  she into a barber’s shop and sought shelter there. However, the man followed them into the barber’s and continued to insult them.”

Toloraia reported that the health conditions of the beaten young people are stable. Before the incident, the Zugdidi policemen seized newspapers of the political party from activists and destroyed them.

“We have been distributing the newspaper “Alliance for Georgia” for a week where appeals of our leaders, action plan and other materials were published. Today, about 50 activists were giving out the newspapers in Zugdidi and evidently, the district patrol police noticed it. The police seized 150 newspapers from the activists and threw them into the patrol car,” said Toloraia.

According to Toloraia, patrol policemen threw the newspapers into the car trunks and took them somewhere.
