Former Policemen Called upon Their Colleagues To Support People

April 9, 2009

Youth branch of the “House of Free Opinion” held peaceful demonstration together with former policemen and singers in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Demonstrators brought tulips to the ministry and left them in the yard in order to demonstrate their slogan “No to Violence”.

Giorgi Topuria, chairman of the youth branch of the House of Free Opinion, reported to the Medianews their appeal to Georgian law enforcers was not to disperse Georgian people on the demonstration. He said former policemen, who did not obey the government on April 9, 1989, and did not oppose Georgian people, came to the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with them.

“We would remind policemen that they are Georgians and their peaceful compatriots will be at the demonstration. So, we call law enforcers not to raise hands against Georgian people and not to use violence whoever orders them to do so. They should take after those people who supported people twenty years ago and did not obey the orders of high-ranking officials. Former Minister of Internal Affairs, Shota Gorgodze and singers, who sang the famous song after the tragedy of April 9, 1989, came here with us; the singers are signing the same song now,” said Giorgi Topuria.

Beso Tamazashvili, former police captain stated to the Medianews that he wanted to remind his colleagues that standing beside their people means service their state.

“I want to tell current policemen that we faced the similar situation on April 9 1989 but did not obey they orders and supported the people. Today, I can say that it was the most correct decision I have ever made in my life,” said Beso Tamazashvili.
