Eka Beselia’s Son – Victim of Political Retribution

July 1, 2008

Appeal of the Human Rights Centre

The Human Rights Center is concerned that a criminal case has been opened against the son of Eka Beselia, member of the United Opposition.  Rati Milorava, 15 was invited to the Main Division of Tbilisi Police for interrogation and has been charged with hooliganism; the charge for this category of delinquency is punishable with a term of 2-5 years of confinement. .

Eka Beselia states that her son was an eyewitness of the fight between a shop guard and a group of teens some 4 months ago. However, the police did not become interested in this incident at the time of its occurrence. The case was opened only when they realized that Rati Milorava was Eka Beselia’s son.

Beselia states that the attempt to arrest her son is politically motivated, connected with her political activities.

Considering the current situation in Georgia, where people are being commonly persecuted, as well as political parties, the Human Rights Center considers that the government has taken advantage of the opportunity and it is now attempting to use Eka Beselai’s son in carrying out political revenge and getting “payback” for her activities.

The Human Rights Center calls upon the media and international organizations to react to this situation in a timely basis and to take appropriate measures.
