Cartu Foundation Stopped Compensations for the Victims of Natural Disaster in Kakheti

Victimized families by 2012 natural disaster in 2012 will no longer receive compensations from the Cartu Foundation. The lawyer of the Foundation Nino Kiknadze said last year the Foundation transferred 98 million lari and left beneficiaries will receive compensations from alternative source.

“Every victimized family will receive compensation. However, not Cartu Foundation but alternative Fund will take up the responsibility. We cooperated with the Ministry of Infrastructure and paid compensations based on their lists. According to our information about 400 families have left without compensation, however, unfortunately we do not know when they will receive their compensations.”

Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure does not have information about the issue. “It was charity of the Cartu Foundation and the Ministry just provided them with the lists of the victimized families. I really do not know whether the Foundation will continue compensation of the beneficiaries or whether another Fund will replace them. I repeat again, it was charity activity of the Cartu Foundation and we cannot compel anybody to do it. They have spent over 98 million lari on the purpose and it is not strange if they have faced some problems,” head of public relation service at the Ministry Magda Popiashvili said.

In July 2012, as a result of storm and hail, several thousand families from Telavi, Gurjaani, Lagodekhi, Kvareli and Sagarejo districts got victimized. Foundation Cartu allocated about 100 million lari for the victimized population of Kakheti region. The sum was divided among 28 500 families. The compensation allocation stopped several months before the 2013 Presidential Elections because the Foundation belonged to Bidzina Ivanishvili. Currently, more than 400 families are left without compensations.
