Demonstration to Request Reimbursement of the Damage Caused by Natural Disaster

March 28, 2014

Lado Bichashvili, Shida Kartli

Population of four villages in Gori district request reimbursement of the damage caused by natural disaster in August, 2013. The natural disaster destroyed harvest in the villages of Ditsi, Korda, Arbo and Ergneti (bordering with Tskhinvali region).

On March 25, part of Ditsi residents gathered in front of the Shida Kartli regional administration to request compensation. They threatened with holding demonstrations in front of the Kutaisi parliament.

Levan Dugadze, demonstrator: “Only few people have come here but in future residents of all four villages will go to Kutaisi and hold protest assemblies in front of the parliament. Spring works have started, we cultivated our plots but now have to seed something to get harvest. Unless they give us compensations, our villages will get abandoned.”

Demonstrators called on the government to timely find out situation because villagers intend to start spring works in their plots with the compensation funds.

Besik Maisuradze, demonstrator: “Long time has passed. People have to buy fertilizers and we are waiting for the compensations. Ditsi village was hailed on August 28, 2013; they calculated the damage but since then they are promising us to distribute compensations every next day; several months have passed already.”

Aleksandre Maisuradze, demonstrator: “We were told 94 000 lari was allocated to distribute compensations in all four villages. Nobody takes responsibility why these funds have not reached us.”

Deputy Shida Kartli regional governor Giorgi Totaladze met the demonstrators in front of the administration building. The farmers were satisfied with the meeting results. Deputy Governor promised them to resolve problem in near future.

Giorgi Totaladze: “Prime minister of Georgia issued resolution and 94 000 lari was allocated to reimburse damage of this population.

Local government’s representatives do not clarify reasons of the delay in distribution of already allocated compensation funds. Victimized population hope they will receive compensations timely and start agricultural works in their plots.
