Representative of Human Rights Center Attended 111th Session of the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva

On July 10-11 representative of Human Rights Center attended the 111th session of the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva.

Under coordination of Human Rights House Tbilisi and with the support of the Human Rights House Foundation, Human Rights Center and Georgian Center for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (GCRT) prepared report about human rights situation in Georgia and presented it to the UN Human Rights Committee.

The Shadow Report covered such significant issues like rights of citizens living in conflict affected zones, analysis of different aspects from anti-discrimination law, freedom of religion, investigation into the cases of torture victims and their rehabilitation, situation in Georgian penitentiary establishments. The Report was prepared based on the years-long expertise of Human Rights Center and GCRT in the field of human rights. 

The Session reviewed fourth periodic report of the Government of Georgia about implementation of the 1966 Pact on Civic and Political Rights. 

At the Session, members of the UN Human Rights Committee asked questions to the members of the Georgian government’s delegation. Their questions relied on the information provided by the nongovernmental organizations as well as national human rights institutions. Committee members asked questions about the rights of prisoners in Georgian penitentiary establishments, investigation of torture facts, issues of judiciary, problems in conflict affected regions, etc.

The UN Human Rights Committee discussed the report of the Government of Georgia during two days.

Several nongovernmental organizations had sent shadow reports to the UN Human Rights Committee from Georgia.
