Chairman of Pardon Commission Met Prisoners on Hunger-Strike

On August 25 Ministry of Corrections reported that Chairman of Pardon Commission Zviad Koridze visited prisoners on hunger-strike in Prison # 5.

Zviad Koridze said Minister of Corrections Giorgi Mgebrishvili contacted him and asked to visit prison for female convicts and hear their problems.

During the meeting, Koridze answered prisoners’ questions. Female prisoners asked about the work of Pardon Commission. Zviad Koridze clarified details about commission’s work to them.

The Ministry representatives state the prisoners were satisfied with the meeting and said they received full information about the commission. Zviad Koridze noted the meeting was informative and it is necessary for commission members to be more humane when making decisions on pardoning applicant prisoners.

Having met the prisoners on hunger-strike, the Commission chairman met other prisoners too and heard their problems.

Female prisoners on strike also request meeting with the chairwoman of the Parliamentary committee for human rights and civic integration Eka Beselia, with the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Issues Vakhtang Khmaladze, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili, leaders of permanent commission on early release of prisoners and local councils.
