September 23, 2014

Shorena Kakabadze, Kutaisi

On September 21, law enforcement officers arrested the runaway inmate of the penitentiary establishment # 14 in the village of Rukhi, Zugdidi district near the ABL with Gali district several hours after he had escaped from Kutaisi Infection Hospital.

Ministry of Corrections and Legal Aid of Georgia stated: “34-year-old prisoner, who has been in prison since 2009, was taken to medical center from Geguti Prison several times because of his chronic diseases. This time, he took several-day medical course in Kutaisi Infection Hospital and officers intended to take him back to the prison on September 21. However, early in the morning he climbed through the window of the hospital and ran away.”

Investigation was launched under Article 379 of the Criminal Code of Georgia against the prisoner and under Article 243 of the Criminal Code of Georgia against the officers of Kutaisi department of the penitentiary department. The prisoner will have to spend additional four years in prison; as for the convoys, the law enforcement agencies are discussing the sanctions against them.

Humanrights.ge contacted the attorney of the Public Defender in Imereti region, Madona Basiladze, who said: “I cannot say that the prison complained about any particular problems in prison but he had serious health problems and took medical treatment in the jail medical center. Public Defender has not received any complaints from the prisoner or his lawyer; as for information about his health conditions, it is confidential and cannot be issued without the prisoner’s content.”
