Protest Demonstration of the Human Rights House Tbilisi in Support of Human Rights Defenders Arrested in Azerbaijan

October 16, 2014

On October 17, at 12:00 pm Human Rights House Tbilisi and its member organizations will organize demonstration in support of human rights defenders arrested in Azerbaijan in Heydar Aliyev Square, Tbilisi. Demonstrators will walk towards Azerbaijan Embassy in Tbilisi.

Unprecedented persecution measures have been taken against human rights defenders in Azerbaijan for the past few months. Four human rights defenders, actively criticizing the government of Azerbaijan, were arrested for almost equal charges (tax violation, illegal entrepreneurship, abuse of power).

Since May 2014 Azerbaijan chairs Committee of Ministers at the Council of Europe. Despite that, Azerbaijan government does not refrain from repressions against civil society leaders and violates obligations taken by European Convention on Human Rights and other international documents.

Human Rights House Tbilisi and its member organizations call on the Azerbaijan government to stop repressions against civil society representatives; to immediately release arbitrarily detained human rights defenders without any conditions; to stop an end to the persecution and harassment of human rights defenders in Azerbaijan and ensure implementation of their legitimate activities without any obstacles, threats and repression.

Protest demonstration will take place on October 17, at 12:00 pm.
