Mother of the Convicted Requests to Place Her Son in the Prison Close Their Residential Place

February 12, 2015

Mother of the convicted Lasha Labadze petitioned to the Chairman of the Penitentiary Department Gogi Gakharia to move her son to the Rustavi based penitentiary establishment. Convicted Labadze has been in prison # 15 for robbery since 2011 but in February 2015 he was taken to Batumi Prison # 3 for unknown reasons. The mother cannot travel long distance due to hard social conditions and requests to place him in the prison close to their residential area. Lawyer at Human Rights Center Tamar Lukava said the mother has absolutely lawful request to the penitentiary department.

“The Prison Code rules that convicted person should service his/her imprisonment term close to the residential area of his/her relative. The lawful reason for the removal of the convicted person can be overcrowded facility, health conditions of the prisoner or his/her security. In this particular case no similar reason was observed,” Tamar Lukava said.

Representative of the Penitentiary Department said the security department is responsible for the issue and they will respond to the petition within the time regulated by the law.

Human Rights Center petitioned to the Penitentiary Department to return the convicted to the Prison # 15 or in Rustavi based establishment in accordance to the law.
