Risky Zones of Landslide in Gurjaani – Population Urge for Help

March 16, 2015

Lela Khechoshvili, Kakheti

National Environmental Agency sent warning geological conclusions to the Gurjaani district administration. According to the geological research of the National Environmental Agency, families living in the zones of landslide in Gurjaani and in the villages of Gurjaani district Kardenakhi, Tchandari and Kolagi should be immediately resettled. Representatives of the property management, economic development, statistics, infrastructure, space arrangement, architecture and construction service at the Gurjaani district administration informed Human Rights Center about it.

“We informed the Ministry of IDPs from Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees about the geological conclusion. After having studied the situation, the owners of the houses under particular risk received compensation in order to enable the families to resettle to safer territories. There were 12 families under particular risk; soon another 4 families will be added to the list.

Unfortunately, there are many places in Gurjaani district which are dangerous to live in. Particularly, vicinities of the Makharashvili Complex and Akhtala Resort,” Gia Amisulashvili said.

The locals said more than 60 houses are damaged in the Oktomberi Street and it is dangerous to live in. Local resident Natela Zirakashvili said the prices on houses have increased because of the fall of lari and they cannot afford to purchase anything with the compensation they received from the Ministry. Family of local Natela Gogolashvili cannot buy alternative house either.

“The houses ruin because Akhtala resort has renewed working. For a while it did not work but now some new sources of the medical mud appeared. We cannot purchase a house in Gurjaani for 20 000 lari. We do not want to move to the village because we cannot leave the town; we constructed house here and how can we abandon it now? But, it is very risky to live here,” Natela Gogolashvili said.

Kardenakhi village attorney Aleksandre Turiashvili said there are many risky zones in their village too and families are eventually resettled from that place. Currently, with the support of the Ministry of Accommodation ten families purchased alternative houses. Each family received 20 000 lari as compensation.

Family of Elza Shiukashvili living alongside the Tbilisi-Telavi central road also has similar problem.

According to the Shiukashvilis, years ago geologists often examined the Akhtala territory but now nobody pays attention to the area.

Local population says that central motorway ruined several times nearby Akhtala that created serious threat of car accidents.

Gurjaani population requests the state to get interested in the problem and start relevant analysis of the territory.
