Human Rights Center Requests MP Eka Beselia to Immediately Quit the Prosecutors Council

January 8, 2016
Human Rights Center has learned from the news reports of different media sources that chairwoman of the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament Eka Beselia has lodged a lawsuit against former chairman of the Pardon Commission Aleko Elisashvili at the court. The MP requests Aleko Elisashvili to deny the allegation that he was under oppression when working on the position of the chairman of the pardon commission.

Human Rights Center will defend interests of Aleko Elisashvili at the court. Concrete strategy of defense will be planned after the lawyer studies the lawsuit. At this stage, Human Rights Center requests that chairwoman of the Human Rights Committee at the Parliament quitted the Prosecutors Council.

After MP Eka Beselia appealed the Court against Aleko Elisashvili, the interest conflict and threat that she may influence the ongoing investigation process in the prosecutor’s office have become more evident as it was underlined in the joint statement of Human Rights Center and other NGOs short time ago.2 It was underlined in the statement that the main purpose of the Prosecutors Council is to ensure independence and transparency of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and to promote effective implementation of the prosecutor’s office’s functions.

Considering the abovementioned, Human Rights Center requests MP Eka Beselia to immediately quit the prosecutors council to avoid threat of impartial investigative procedures and political influence over the process in the prosecutor’s office.
