Shida Kartli Regional Governor Quitted Position

Shida Kartli regional governor Zurab Rusishvili addressed the Government’s Administration with the resignation application. As the representative of the Shida Kartli regional administration’s press-center said, the Prime Minister has already satisfied his application.

Gori district majoritarian MP Malkhaz Vakhtangashvili called on the regional governor Zurab Rusishvili to resign because the political crisis in the region. Vakhtangashvili said it was caused by the wrong policy of the regional governor that the Georgian Dream lost majority in the Gori city council.

Zurab Rusishvili had conflict with Gori district governor when he occupied position of the regional governor.

Members of Kaspi municipal board, including the interim chairman of the board Ilia Zakariadze, complained about the abuse of power and interference in the work of the local self-government bodies by Zurab Rusishvili when he was regional governor. According to the Kaspi municipal board members, the board discussed only 5 out of initially agreed 9 issues at the February 19 session because the regional governor had demanded to cancel the rest issues. Before February 22 session the board majority members met Shida Kartli governor; finally both sessions were cancelled.

Reportedly, Zurab Rusishvili will occupy position of the deputy minister of finances.

Human Rights Center calls on the head of the Government of Georgia Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili to react to the accusations against the former regional governor by the members of the Kaspi municipal board, who blamed the former governor and his administration members in the interference in the work of the municipal board.

Human Rights Center believes Zurab Rusishvili and his office members abused power and interfered in the work of local self-government bodies. Human Rights Center appeals the Prime Minister of Georgia to study alleged facts of interference in the work of local self-governments by Zurab Rusishvili while he was regional governor. 

In accordance to the ordinance on State Attorney – Governor, the Governor is responsible to respect the right of local self-government bodies to implement their authorities independently and with responsibility.
