Non-functioning anti-hail system – General Inspection commenced investigation

May 18, 2016

Heavy hail has devastated vine-yards in Kakheti for the past weeks. Despite that, as locals say, the state has not yet used the anti-hail system of the military-scientific technical center Delta. The Kakheti population requests the government to use the system and reimburse the damage.

According to the information of the Ministry of Defense, their General Inspection will study the conditions of the anti-hail systems in Kakheti. They say the decision was made as a result of high public interest in the problem.

Chairman of the United National Movement’s Kakheti regional organization Giorgi Botkoveli said the GI of the Defense Ministry launched the investigation after the UNM made statement about non-functioning anti-hail systems.

“In 2013, the Government of Georgia declared that installment of the anti-hail system was one of their successful projects, for what they paid 20 million GEL. The system could reduce the impact of the hail at 95% but they have not used them so far. We several times called on the authority to respond to this problem but nobody pays attention to it for three years already. After half of the Kakheti region population lost their harvest, the GI started investigation. However, representatives of the Delta claim they are not going to resume functioning of the system till the end of the month,” Giorgi Botkoveli said.

The May 15 hail damaged three municipalities in Kakheti region: Gurjaani, Signagi and Sagarejo municipalities; it devastated fruit-gardens, vine-yards and strawberry gardens of local farmers.

According to the press-center of the Signagi municipality administration, their representatives visited sites of natural disaster and calculated the loss of local population.

Specially established commission is evaluating the damage of the population. According to the preliminary information 1400 hectares of vine-yard were hailed and destroyed in Signagi and Gurjaani municipalities. The damage was not yet evaluated in Sagarejo district. It is not known yet whether the state will pay compensation to the victimized farmers or not.
