Three young people who were arrested by Abkhazian side in the village of Shamgona are still captured. According to Gali district Administrative Board, the young people will be tried in Sokhumi tomorrow.

According to Deputy Governor of the Gali District, Tornike Kilanava, representatives of the UN and OSCE visited the detainees in the Sokhumi prison. International organizations demand to release the detained students; however, the Abkhazian side refuses to obey their demands. In exchange of the detainees de-facto authority wants the Georgian side to fire Davit Sigua, chairman of the Abkhazian Central Election Commission and Fridon Chakaberia, Gemgebeli of the village of Kvemo Barghefi from their positions. Kilanava said that the representatives of the Abkhazian legitimate authority do their best to release the arrested students. “Various bodies have been involved in the situation and active negotiations are going on with the Abkhazian side. The Abkhazian Authority does its best to return the participants of the peaceful demonstrations to their families,” said Kilanava.

We should point out once more that Levan Ghachava, Iveri Khorshia and Koba Rigvava were detained by special service officers of the Abkhazian self-proclaimed Republic after having gone to the village of Shamgona to meet their friends who live in Abkhazia.

On March 3, to protest Abkhazian de-facto Parliamentary elections and detention of the students, members if the youth movement “New Generation for United Georgia” and students set a symbolic fire on the bridge over the Enguri River.

Nearly 2 000 students together with their lecturers and co-thinkers gathered in the center of the town and later they went to the Enguri River by cars and buses. The students were holding Georgian flags and roses and population was greeting them with applauses.

Demonstrators set symbolic fire several steps away from the Russian block post. The soldiers in blue helmets were watching the demonstrators, taking photos and video of the event. Later, one of the demonstrators called the demonstration an event from contemporary history.

Tornike Kilanava: “These young people are creating a new history now. They are trying to benefit in resolving the conflicts. They are capable to fetch peace flags. They are those people who can bring Georgian and Abkhaz people together. I suppose Abkhazian side will be kind to release the detainees soon.”

Demonstrators also hope the captured students will be soon released. One of the demonstrators, Dato Tsitanava said that they are going to hold demonstrations until the young people are released.
