Repression of MP Candidate

May 6, 2008
“We walked from Foka to Mtskheta (speaking about pilgrimage from Foka Monastery to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta), and we will manage to walk to Akhaltiskhe too,” said Gogoladze.

The tension is increasing in Akhaltsikhe district with approaching parliamentary elections.  Tamar Gogoladze, majoritarian candidate for MP in Akhaltsikhe District from Georgian Republic Party, complains about suppression. “Election commission members from our party are invited to various instances and are given directives. I know who is meeting them and unless they stop the suppression, I will announce their names and will apply to other forms protest too.”

The candidate cannot take advantage of the pre-election campaign because of various obstacles.

“The cars are “blocked”. I want to hire them I cannot. Every driver stated that they are busy. However, some of them dared to tell me that they were warned not to help me,” said Tamar Gogoladze. She added that lack of transportation will not prevent her from meeting with voters.
I walked the distance from Foka to Mtskheta over forty days. I want everybody, who blocks cars for me, to know that I will walk the entire district in the remaining twenty days before the election.”

Tamar Gogoladze complains about local TV Company “Channel IX” too. “The TV Company belongs to the majoritarian candidate for MP representing the ruling National party. The member of our party called the company under my request and they stated I had to pay 100 USD for a minute of advertisement. They explained that I could enjoy free time of advertisement on TV only after I purchased paid time. There is another point, why the local TV station does not care about other candidates besides the one from the leading party. Why do they broadcast the pre-election campaign of only one candidate? We do not have equal rights and my rights are violated.”

Ordinary citizens also complain about the local TV Station other than the candidate. “We are bored to see the advertisements only about candidate, each and every day. It is terrible. A politician needs to be promoted. However, if you call yourself a journalist, then why do not share the time between all candidates?! Are there others?” asked Eliza Beridze.
