Noisy Election in Gori on a Maliciously Peaceful Background

May 21, 2008

From  7:00 AM, noise filled Gori. 7:30 at the university of Gori,  Lexo Vilauri, representative of the “Young Republicans” , was slandered to be great republican and was not allowed to enter the poll station; attendance of two republicans is prohibited at one polling station. Members of the United National Movement joke about the discontent between opposition parties and observers. It’s noteworthy that at some poll stations, several opposition representatives do not agree with the complaints of observers.

Representative of the united opposition was dismissed from the polling station in the village of Kvarkheti iin Gori District. At the same station, election commission don’t know what to do with the Labour party complaint. Election Commission declared  ”He wrote complaint, put it on the table and went away.”

“There is a horrible situation in Arbo, Ditzi, and Kvarkheti. 3 and for ballots are massively thrown in election boxes”, announced Soso Borcvadze, the head of the local HQ of the united opposition.

As the representative of the Human Rights Centre stated, head of commission, Levan Mindiashvili in Ditzi village was withdrawn. Complaint about him was written by the organization “New Generation – New Initiative”, and all other observers confirmed them.
Before that, head of Commission Levan Mindiashvili was demanding to fire representative of the united opposition from the PS. According to our information, united opposition was also writing a complaint on Levan Mindiashvili and it  irritated him.   Representatives of the National Movement reported, an observer from the “United Oppositions”  did not know where he was from.

In Ditsi village, complaint of opposition and NGOs sharply differ. Later, opposition representatives filed a complaint stating the New Generation – New Initiative was discribing real situation incorrectly. Local people state those people were threatened.

By 11:00 AM, situation worsened at the polling station in the village of Megvrekisi. Representative of Fair Elections was not given the possibility to file a complaint. Reason of complaint here was throwing of several ballots together. At last, registrator was warned, not to give more than one ballot to the voter.

In the village of Kvakhvreli, at about 12:00 PM, commission couldn’t agree how many voters to register on the demonstration paper. The commission chairperson was declaring that 311 voters had voted at the poll station so far, but observers counted 237 ballots thrown in the ballor box.

At Gori polling station # 3, majority candidate from the Republic Party observed that Assembly member was making speech in favor of the ruling party, which contradcts Article 73 of the Georgian Election Code.
