Non-Governmental Organizations Are Going to Hold Demonstration in Kakheti

April 11, 2007

On April 12, Thursday, at 12:00 AM, Representatives of the Kakheti region based NGOs are going to hold protest demonstration in front of the Gurjaani Municipality building.

The reason for the demonstration is the controversy between NGOs and local authority. The latter blocks the public information for NGOs. The worst is the situation in Gurjaani, Telavi and Sighnaghi districts. The head of the Gurjaani Municipality Press Service Department was fired from the work for having cooperated with the independent media.

Representatives of the Human Rights Center, Lawyers’ Development Center and Kakheti based NGOs Club will take part in the demonstration. Demonstrators will send the Kakheti region District Governors and heads of the Municipalities Articles form the Georgian Administrative Code that deal with the publicity of the information.

Demonstrators will support the legislative initiative of the Public Defender that envisages the liability of public official who does not give public information to journalists.
