Prisoner’s Lawyer Urges for Help

April 23, 2007

Mebrzoli Chkadua, a lawyer for the prisoner at the Zugdidi Detention Setting # 4 applied to the Human Rights Center’s Zugdidi office for help. He stated that his client, Zaza Tsimintia, was badly injured in his both eyes after an electric boiler burst out in the cell. Later on his health conditions worsened and Tsimintia was taken to republic hospital within the Penitentiary Department. On April 18 he was operated on at the City Hospital. The doctors removed his right eye. Soon after the operation, on the same day the prisoner was taken back to the jail hospital.

At present, he lost sight in his left eye too and doctors speak about removing of the second eye as well.

Zaza Tsimentia needs permanent medical control and treatment; however it is impossible at the jail hospital. His health and life is in danger.
“Regarding the situation we urge you to mediate us to the board of the Penitentiary Department in order to take Tsimintia to special medical institution. The prisoner must take corresponding treatment,” said Chkadua.
