Sozar Subari Demands To Charge the Minister of Refugees and Accommodation Under Law

April 25, 2007

Georgian Public Defender, Sozar Subari, demands to charge Giorgi Kheviashvili, the Minister of Refugees and Accommodation under the law.

Today, Zubari said at the press-conference that the rights of IDPs are not protected in the country. It is the result of insufficient and irresponsible activities of the Ministry.

“Although Georgia has enacted the strategy on resolution the problems of IDPs, the Ministry does not follow it. They do not act to implement the regulations of the strategy. The ministry has not presented the plan of implementing the strategy. Thus the document is an imaginary one, if it did not have any plan on further activities,” said Subari.

Subari said that the Ministry does not support the integration of the victims of natural disaster in tensely settled districts. Thus, eco-migrants and local population often have conflicts regarding the living conditions.

Public Defender said that the Ministry cannot give out the IDP certificates to the people and the IDPs residing in districts have to arrive in Tbilisi several times.

Subari claims that the Public Defender’s Office has applied to the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation regarding various violations several times. These facts were mentioned in his 2006 report to the Parliament; however the Ministry did not react on it.
