MP Beso Jugheli Changed His Mind About Suing Journalist

May 17, 2007

MP Beso Jugheli, member of the governing party “United National Movement” changed his mind about suing journalist Eka Kvesitadze.

Yesterday at the press conference held in the Parliament MP stated that he has a “moral and legal ground” to appeal to the court with the view of protecting his dignity, though he refuses to exercise this right to avoid the speculation through ethnic topic. “I urge everyone to cease this incident, and I request mass media to be more careful when covering ethnic-related topics”- said Jugheli.

In her publication titled “Jughelism” Eka Kvesitadze criticized MP for the statements regarding national minorities made by the latter on radio “Utsnobi” and “TV Imedi”.
“For years now no one in Georgia  has dared to make such an anti-Armenian, insulting, chauvinistic and totally outrageous  statement“ - wrote Kvesitadze in her publication.

MP Beso Jugheli has already publicly apologized for the incorrect expressions, though at the yesterday’s press conference he declared that in Kvesitadze’s article the quote - ”This law (the government’s initiative on introducing solidary tax in historic districts of Tbilisi – media.ge) is not against Georgians, these districts are mainly populated with Armenians, Azerbaijani Kurds and other nationalities” - in fact was not cited, it was the lie intentionally made up by the journalist.

According to Jugheli the record, as  a proof, was not found in radio “Utsnobi”, though instead Eka Khoperia the anchor of the program informed the MP that, as far a she remembers, no such quote was made.
