Young Lawyers Promise Land Owners to Protect Their Rights

July 31, 2007

Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) protests the resolution enacted by the Tbilisi Municipality on July 30.  According to the document inhabitants of the Tabukashvili Street # 50 and many other land owners in Tbilisi face the danger of losing their rights on the land.

Giorgi Chkheidze, the head of the Association, said that according to the resolution the incapable department within the Tbilisi Municipality granted the owners with those lands in 1994-1998. More exactly that body was Municipality Collegium. Consequently the documents on ownership are illegal and must be cancelled.

The motive for the Tbilisi Municipality’s recent resolution is that in 1994-1998 only Tbilisi Mayer was in power to grant lands. As Giorgi Chkheidze said, the City Hall has already started administrative process against the resolutions enacted in 1994-1998 and it will result into deprivation of lands from owners. The total amount of the disputed land is 200 000 sq. meters.

“According to the resolution not only Tbilisi Mayer but the Municipality Collegium also had authority to distribute plots. Thus, deprivation of flats is illegal and the rights of property owners are violated,” said Giorgi Chkheidze.

Irakli Tsnobiladze, lawyer for the Association, said that their organization is ready to protect the rights of the victim citizens during case discussion at both Tbilisi Municipality and court.
