Situation Has Been Calmed Down in Avchala Juvenile Custody

Tbilisi.14.08.07.Medianews. By this time situation has been calmed down in Avchala Juvenile Custody.

Jail Administration and Penitentiary Department within the Ministry of Justice controlled the situation; however the number of bailiffs has increased.

The disturbance in custody started late at night on August 13. Simple misunderstanding between juveniles turned into a serious cluster. A bailiff arrived to calm them down but prisoners assaulted him and tried to provoke riot.

After special armed unit’s arrival, juveniles stopped the riot and cut veins with window glasses according to the Penitentiary Department’s information. They received some other injuries as well.

Sixteen injured juveniles were taken to Ghudushauri Hospital where doctors provided them with medical aid.

Later on, the prisoners were taken back to prison.

Parents of juvenile prisoners, representatives of the Internal Ministry and Ministry of Justice spent whole night close to the Avchala Prison as well as representatives of Public Defender and various non-governmental organizations.
