“Word Demonstration” in Kakheti Region

September 24, 2007

On September 21, regarding the International Day for Peace, Human Rights Center’s Kakheti Office held “Word Demonstration” in Gurjaani. The slogan of the demonstration was “What would you tell Abkhazian people fifteen years later?” Nearly one thousand young people took part in the event; they painted and wrote appeals to Abkhaz people on the asphalt.

Best appeals were selected and their authors were awarded with presents. Because of demonstration Noneshvili Street was blocked for two hours. Public Choir “Gurjaani” opened the demonstration with the song “Varado” (Abkhazian song) and then it was followed with Abkhazian dances. Passers-by were given out sweets with small papers on them where Abkhazian words were written. With the support of local government the demonstration ended with free concert in Culture Center.

Human Rights Center is planning “Word Demonstration” in various regions of Georgia from September 21 to September 27. It started in Kakheti and on September 27 (the day when Abkhazian Civil War finished) it will end in Zugdidi.

People from Abkhazia replied to the Word Demonstration in positive manner. They learned about the event by internet.
Abkhazian War started 15 years ago. The demonstration enabled people to think over the situation again and appeal to Abkhaz society.
