Case on Nana Bebiashvili Will Be Brought to Supreme Court

September 27, 2007

Kutaisi Appeal Court finished the discussion of the case on Nana Bebiashivli and others. Zviad Khujadze was sentenced to five-year-imprisonment, Mamamze Zosiashvili was sentenced to five-year-imprisonment and Bebiashvili will spend ten years in custody.

Nana Bebiashvili was detained on September 2 of 2006 with her nephews Mamamze and Meliton Zosiashvilis and their friend Zviad Khujadze close to Terjola District during special operation. She was blamed for selling particularly large amount of narcotic-Subotex.

Lawyer for the accused considers that there are not enough evidences against Nana Bebiahsvili in case materials and Appeal Court should have taken it into consideration. However, the accused is still in custody.

Niko Kankava, attorney for Nana Bebiashvili, considers that the verdict of the Kutaisi Appeal Court is illegal and pointed out in his conversation with the Human Rights Center that “Nana Bebiashvili was found guilty by the court though we demanded to approve her in our appeal. Kutaisi Appeal Court does not seem to be ready to make legal decisions and expects Supreme Court to set example of passing just verdicts. We will appeal against their verdict at the Supreme Court and if they do not satisfy our appeal, we will bring our suit to Strasbourg Court.”

Nana Bebiashvili’s attorney applied to the General Inspection of the Internal Ministry and Prosecutor General’s Office regarding the violations in the investigation. However, they did not receive any replies from them yet.
