The Trial of Those Charged for Their Role in the Prison Rebellion Has Been Postponed

October 22, 2007

The trial of those charged for their role in the prison rebellion before the Tbilisi Court of Appeal has been postponed indefinitely.

As lawyer Gela Nikolaishvili told “Media news” the trial was scheduled for today, but because judge Mzia Lomtatidze was busy the trial has been postponed.

The trial is about the incidents which took place on the 27 of March, 2006 in Tbilisi prison №5, during which seven prisoners were killed and twenty-two of them were injured according to the official data.

The Tbilisi Municipal Court sentenced Levan Mamardashvili to 12 years imprisonment, Levan Tsindeliani to 10 years imprisonment, Nikoloz Makharadze to 7 years imprisonment, and Malkhaz Zedelashvili, Zurab Vibliani and Giorgi Avaliani to 6 years imprisonment for organizing the rebellion and resisting law enforcement authorities. According to the defense the sentence is unlawful and unsubstantiated, and therefore it was appealed before the court of second instance.

Before the prison rebellion Malkhaz Zedelashvili was already sentenced to 23 years imprisonment, Zurab Vibliani and Giorgi Avaliani were sentenced to 21 years imprisonment; Nikoloz Makharadze and Paata Mamardashvili were sentenced to 21 years imprisonment and Levan Tsindeliani was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment.
