Leri Khabelovi Charges the Government for Discriminating him on the Ground of his Nationality

October 25, 2007

Today the opening of the meeting of the executive committee of the Georgian National Olympic Committee created a stir. The vice-president of this committee, Leri Khabelovi, who seemed to be one of the real candidates for the post of committee president, stated at the start of the meeting that his candidacy is unacceptable to the government only because of his nationality; he is a famous person, a gold-medal winner at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and a five-time world champion.

The minister of Culture, Monument Protection and Sports of Georgia, Giorgi Gabashvili, was filled with indignation because of Khabelovi’s statement; he called the vice-president of Olympic Committee “politically booked” and added that after this statement Khabelovi’s candidacy became more unacceptable.

After the dispute between Khabelovi and Gabashvili, the meeting of the executive committee of the Georgian National Olympic Committee was closed for journalists.
