Victimized Signagi Residents Will Meet Georgian President with Protest Demonstration

November 1, 2007
Despite the launched investigation at the Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office, Signagi Police satisfied the demand of certain Bachana Davlianidze and emptied the space in the city center under force for him. Signagi residents, Manana Macharashvili, Tamar Tarashvili and others were forced to sell their properties. Those people were harassed and their rights were restricted. Besides that, the property of Tamaz Gorelishvili was sequestered by Tax Inspection and according to the current legislation it must not have been sold.

The owners were harassed after applying to human rights defenders and the prosecutor’s office for help. Financial Police threatened the suitors and their family members with charging them under criminal law.

Manana Macharashvili said in her conversation with the Human Rights Center that although Signagi was rehabilitated within the presidential program, it happened at the expense of local people’s restricted rights.

The abused families, together with local NGOs, are going to hold peaceful demonstration on Friday, November 2 in Signagi. They want to attract the attention of the president Saakashvili who is going to arrive in their city with the presidents of other countries on that day.
