Matthias Iorsh and Kastriot Islam, the spokesmen for the Monitoring Committee of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly, made a statement in Strasbourg regarding their findings on their recent visit to Georgia. The Council of Europe’s representation in Georgia published those statements yesterday. Iorsh and Islam state that they are deeply concerned about recent events in the country. They called upon the Georgian government to, “ be faithful to the Rule of Law and comply with the European Convention on Human Rights; particularly, the rights on free expression, exchanging the information and gathering.”
Iorsh and Islam condemned the use of excessive force by police to disperse peaceful demonstrators on November 7. “The usage of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators, shutting down private broadcasting companies and restriction of information is not acceptable for a democracy in any kind of situation,” the statement read.
The statement points out that the Council of Europe and the International Commonwealth are ready to assist Georgia in its current political crisis.
