A resolution of the Government of Georgia dated December 3 stipulated that the governmental program for assisting infants from socially excluded families has been abolished. The program covered those families that were listed in the unified database of socially excluded families and had poverty scores of 100 000 points or less.

You can see many people every day who stand in long lines in front of chambers of various officials and are asking for some form of assistance. Some want to ask for money so that his/her child can have a medical operation, others need money for the house roof repair, some ask for help for they have no income and therefore they are just hungry. According to Zviad Khmaladze, head of Gori Municipality-Sakrebulo, 80, 000 GEL was spent in the last 6 months of 2008 on socially excluded people. This amount of money was redistributed among a total of 165 citizens.

Former employees of the Sighnaghi Library have been protesting in the building of Sighnaghi Municipality Board for ten days. Demonstrators state they were fired from the library under the order of Nugzar Abulashvili, Sighnaghi single mandate candidate of the Georgian Parliament. The reason for their dismissal was the refusal of library personnel to visit families before the parliamentary elections and persuade people to cast their votes for the ruling party.

On March 8 women from Batumi held a demonstration and demanded to introduce amendments to the Labor Code and to protect the rights of the employed people. Representatives of the Trade Union sent a petition to the Georgian President with the above-mentioned demands.
How People from Gori Are Transported to Turkey to Get Jobs

“We were stuck in Istanbul for 24 days. I worked at one place for two or three days without pay. We were nearly ten people in total and we had only one meal a day. The meal was one loaf of bread divided among ten people. The boss would disappear throughout the day. Our passports were taken from us. Nino Gelashvili and one more woman named Lela threatened to tear up our passports if we decided to leave. Finally I called my family in Gori and asked them to send me money to arrive back. Otherwise they would have never seen me again.” These are the words of a distressed twenty-eight-year-old woman named Tamar Dzabakhidze. She is a resident of Gori who became a victim of human trafficking after being seduced by her neighbor and friend Nino Gelashvili.

Imereti Regional Branch of the non-custodial and Probation National Service Department is located in Railway Square # 3 in Kutaisi. There are few people working in the office and the same thing can be notice in other cities. Most don’t know what the Probation Service Department does, not even what it is suppose to do. For all practical purposes it is something that looks good in theory but has not been put into practice.
