Personal security, food and hygiene supply, medical service, meetings with family members/relatives, phone calls and correspondence with relatives – this is not full list of rights guaranteed by Georgian legislation for prisoners; inmates of Kutaisi Prison # 2 started hunger-strike because they could not enjoy the aforementioned rights.

Doctors Strike in Poti – SOS! Save Us from Aldagi

Doctors in Poti hospital have been on strike for several days, protesting unbearable working conditions and low salaries created by My Family Clinic and the insurance company Aldagi BCI. On October 31, 2012 their labor contracts expired. Three doctors were unexpectedly notified about their dismissal. The doctors claim they were fired because of political reasons though hospital administration denies their allegation.

Chechen refugee Akhmed Chataev, 32, has been arbitrarily placed in Gldani prison # 18 for more than one month. Russian soldiers cut off his right hand in 2000 when he was kidnapped from Uru-Martani Hospital, where he was ruthlessly tortured and electro-shocked. Chataev lost his left leg in Georgia after senior officials of the MIA took him to Lopota Gorge to negotiate with militants but was shot by sniper in the gorge.

“We do not need self-proclaimed district governor!” On October 30-31 Samtredia residents protested Avtandil Sturua’s appointment to the position of district governor with this slogan. After October 1 parliamentary elections, Samtredia municipal board elected Avto Sturua for the position of the district governor who was the district majority MP in the previous convocation parliament.

Meeting of South Caucasus Human Rights Defenders in Tbilisi

On October 25-27, regional meeting of the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders was held in Tbilisi based hotel Bomondi. The main topic of the conference was intimidation on human rights defenders and lawyers in the South Caucasus countries. They planned joint strategic campaign and drafted recommendations to the governments of South Caucasus countries.
