Private Properties Are Still Harassed in Sighnaghi after Elections

July 14, 2008

Based on the notification of the Sighnaghi Municipality Board the police dismantled the café-bar of Mariam Mirzoeva, located in Sighnaghi.

The family resisted the dismantling process but the police detained the single mother of two under-age children for minor hooliganism. The court imposed the fine of 400 GEL on her.

In her conversation with the Radio Hereti, Matilda Mirzoeva assesses the fact as intimidation and states that the board of the Sighnaghi district administration does not obey the law and the president.

Matilda Mirzoeva stated that before opening the café she drew up all necessary documents and started working only after that.

Matilda stated that the administration was interested in selling out the territory.

Tengiz Bezhashvili, the lawyer for the Mirzoevs, assessed the fact as vandalism and stated that the legal owner of the land is Matilda Mirzoeva.

Sighnaghi District administration considers Mirzoev’s accusations are groundless and they claim that the café was legally dismantled.

Zaza Zedelashvili, Sighnaghi district governor, reported to the radio Hereti that the “territory belongs to the state and cafes should not exist on the area.”

The abused family intends to meet the president Mikheil Saakashvili in near future to resolve the problem.
