Crumbling Walls of Ateni Sioni Orthodox Church

July 16, 2008

Recent heavy rains have created additional damage for Ateni Sioni (an ancient Orthodox Church in the Shida Kartli region). Residents of the village of Ateni state that the walls of the church are now starting to fall down.

The historical monument has not been repaired since 2003, and the delayed repairs makes matters worst.  The old scaffold still stands and is practically useless. Locals demand that responsible agencies immediately start paying some attention to the church and before it is too late.

Local authority promised that the renovation of the church will start sometime next year.
