Human Rights Court in Strasbourg Will Discuss Suit of Georgia VS Russia on April 16

April 13, 2009

Human Rights European Court will discuss the suit of Georgia VS Russia on April 16.

News Agency “Interfax” spread the news based on the information of Strasbourg Human Rights Court.

The suit was submitted to the court in March of 2007 based on the Article 33 of the European Convention which deals with basic freedoms and human rights. In the suit Russia is accused for systematic violation of human rights of Georgian immigrants during the deportation.

The communiqué states that “the suit is about the events that occurred on September 27, 2006 after four Russian officers were arrested in Georgia,” Government of Georgia claims that collective deportation of citizens of Georgia contradicts the international norms. Besides that, Tbilisi argues about the conditions that were created “at least for 2 380 Georgian citizens,” as it is stated in European Court and Russia is accused for the persecution of Georgian immigrants, for the interference in their personal lives.

Government of Georgia states that closing the borders between the two countries, suspension of air and post communication deprived the people from the minimal chance of getting aided.

According to the Interfax, the government of Russia calls the appeals of Georgia groundless and they assess the suit against Russia as a desire of Georgia to destroy the relationship with Russia completely. “Georgian side should be aware that next unfriendly step VS Russia is next bad news in our relationship,” it is said in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
