Olip Skug: “Security in Conflict Regions of Georgia Is not Guaranteed”

November 13, 2009

“In conflict regions of Georgia security of people is not guaranteed. EU Monitoring Mission has important role to maintain the security”, said Olip Skug, ambassador of Sweden to EU and head of representative delegation of EU member states at the press-conference on November 12.

EU expresses deep concern about detention of the children from Tirdznisi village. However, Olip Skug considers the incident can be resolved. He appeals to both sides to resolve the problem immediately.

Ambassador of Sweden added that EU supports territorial integrity of Georgia. He is concerned because the EU cannot carry out its mandate in entire territory.

“The problem is that international society does not know what is happening in Abkhazia and South Osssetia.EU mission will continue working, though the aim of our delegation is to get detailed information not only about conflict zones, but about the situation in entire Georgia”, said Olip Skug.

Hansiorg Haber, head of the EU mission, stated that EU mission is civil, unarmed and it does not have right to force Abkhazian or South Ossetian separatists to let observers into their territory. EU observers have not been able to enter Abkhazia or South Ossetia so far.

“We support Georgia and do not recognize policy and independence and de-facto authorities”, said Hansiorg Haber.

At the press conference questions were asked about mission mandate. Despite the problems, ambassador of Sweden thinks that the mandate is comprehensive and nobody intends to change it. The ambassador is content with the work of mission.

Ambassadors of EU States visited Vasiani military base as well as IDP settlements in Tserovani, Tsilkani and checkpoint in Odzisi.
