Sokhumi Thinks Deployment of UN Observers in Abkhazia Is Unreal At The Moment

September 2, 2010
Sokhumi thinks deployment of the UN observers in Abkhazia is unreal at the moment. The news agency Apsni News reported the head of the Sokhumi delegation at the Geneva negotiations Viacheslav Chirikba stated about it.

Chirikba said that deployment of UN mission or observers is theoretically admissible variant so far.

“Abkhazia has permanent connection with the UN; particularly within the framework of Geneva negotiations. The UN officials visit Abkhazia; they participate in five-party negotiations in Gali. We hope, Abkhazia will become the member of this global network and they will have plenipotentiary representation in Abkhazia then; now it is too early to speak about it,” said Chirikba.

Russian edition “Vzgliad” published Chirikba’s comment on September 1 where he stated that “Sokhumi wants to allow UN observers to deploy on their side.” He clarified that new Abkhazian draft-project on non-use force proposes the deployment of UN observers which will be introduced at the next round in Geneva.
