Prisoner Tariel Sakvarelidze Cut off and Ate His Ear

November 30, 2010

The inmate of the Rustavi prison # 2 Tariel Sakvarelidze cut off and then ate his ear.

His attorney Vladimer Tabaghua informed the news agency “Pirveli” about it.

According to the attorney, the inattention of the prison administration towards the convicted and his grave moral conditions made the prisoner commit similar action.

The attorney said that Sakvarelidze was taken to the Gldani jail hospital only after this incident though his health conditions were already grave because of frequent physical abuse by the prison personnel.

“He was not medically treated and did not receive medicines. Besides, there are five medical conclusions which prove that Sakvarelidze has mental problems and should take corresponding treatment at the mental hospital. His placement in the detention setting is a serious violation of the law,” said Tabaghua.

The son of the late president of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia – Tsotne Gamsakhurdia – who is in prison as well, also spoke about inhuman treatment to Sakvarelidze by the prison administration. Tsotne Gamsakhurdia requested to stop the torture of the prisoner during his hunger-strike.
