Snails Damaged Wine-Yards but Minister Knows Nothing About It

May 17, 2011
Snails attacked wine-yards, fruit-gardens and kitchen gardens in Kakheti region. Farmers from Vazisubani and Kardenakhi villages told the Information Center of Kakheti that snails destroyed 80% of their harvest. They urge for help.

“They ate up recently grown up bean-plants, onion and herb. We collect snails and take them out of the plots in spades every day,” said Lia Mekokishvili from Vazisubani village.

“They have destroyed us! They leave us hungry! Nothing stops them! We are taking them out of the plots with sacks, burn them but next day the wine-yards are again full of snails. They have eaten up the vine-trees,” said Tamaz Chakhvashvili from Kardenakhi.

Information Center of Kakheti called the Minister of Agriculture of Georgia Bakur Kvezereli.

-Mr. Bakur, do you have know that snails invaded the wine-yards, fruit-gardens and kitchen gardens in Kakheti region? How does the Ministry plan to prevent the problem?

-I have no information about it, so I cannot say how we can assist farmers. You should apply to the Plant Protection Service Agency who can have corresponding information.”

Gurjaani district deputy governor Valeri Gorgisheli said they should spray chemical substance in the gardens; the substance is not dangerous for people.
