Christian-Democrats Request Suspension of Granting Status of Legal Entity of Public Law to Religious Unions

July 4, 2011

Christian-Democrats are requesting suspension of granting status of legal entity of public law to religious unions. The member of Christian-Democrats Nika Laliashvili stated the corresponding at the special session of Parliament while discussing the draft law to Civil Code at the first hearing.

Laliashvili was interested whether the neighboring countries of Georgia are willing to do the same for Georgian church.

“I think we should not decide this issue unilaterally. We should address our church and find out how well the status of our church is protected in the neighboring countries,” – he noted.

According to Laliashvili, the project is not unacceptable but the explanation “the religious entities in close ties with Georgia” is unclear.

According to the draft amendments to Civil Code, the religious entities in close ties with Georgia, particularly Roman Catholic, Armenian Apostolic, Baptist, Muslim and Judaist Churches must be legal entities of public law.
