New Notion – Humanitarian Status Introduced to Georgian Legislation

November 7, 2011

The parliament of Georgia is discussing the draft-law about Refugee and Humanitarian Status. If the draft-law is adopted, a new notion “humanitarian status” will be introduced to the Georgian law.

According to the draft-law, a person, who cannot meet the requirements of the refugee status, but cannot return to his/her place of residence due to certain humanitarian reasons, can receive humanitarian status.

“By introduction of the humanitarian status, the Georgian law will comply with international agreements, conventions, protocols and declarations,” the introduction letter of the draft-law clarifies and names Refugee Convention of 1951 and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugee, 1967 among other international documents.
