Bidzina Ivanishvili Stops Process of giving up French Citizenship

February 5, 2013

Prime Minister of Georgia is citizen of France and stopped process of giving up his French citizenship, Bidzina Ivanishvili told journalists before a press conference.

He said when cohabitation started he didn’t accept Georgian citizenship offered by Mikheil Saakashvili.

“I would be granted Georgian citizenship if I renounced my French citizenship, though I stopped the process. Why should I work on whims, when it’s enough to receive Georgian citizenship and I will be deprived of the right to be Prime Minster, such a senseless amendment was made to the Constitution, as they had fears that there would be candidates from Russia or other countries. According to the constitutional amendment, Prime Minister can’t have dual citizenship, but at the same time any citizen of Europe can be Prime Minister”, Bidzina Ivanishvili said.

He said that the new government will try to make normal constitutional changes, which will give rights to everyone on everything.
