With the support of Human Rights Center, legal owner returned property

September 10, 2014

Human Rights Center

With free legal aid provided by Human Rights Center Elza Shekriladze returned her property, house, where people had broken into years ago; they did not intend to leave the space regardless the court judgment passed in favor of the owner.

Owner Elkza Shekriladze purchased a house in Manavi village, Sagarejo district years ago but could not enter there because relatives of the previous owner did not allow her into.

In accordance to the law, the owner applied to police for help several times; applied to different institutions but the process was dragged out because in August, 2013 Sagarejo district office of the MIA launched criminal investigation into alleged illegal purchase of the house. Unreasonably long time was spent on investigation – almost one year and it was finally dropped in April 2014 without taking any farther measures to protect the rights of legal owner of the property.

Human Rights Center monitored the ongoing process into the case based on the application of the owner Elza Shekriladze; the Center prepared legal documents for her. On September 4, 2014 representative of the Human Rights Center monitored activities implemented by Sagarejo police office with regard to Shekriladze’s property.

Although on September 4 in parallel to the measures taken for the prevention harassment of the owner’s property rights, the perpetrators verbally assaulted the legal owner of the property (police officers did not take measures to combat the verbal assault), Sagarejo district police officers managed to avoid physical controversy between conflicting parties and return the house to its legal owner.
