September 17, 2015

The Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance in Georgia, Kakhi Kakhishvili recently announced that the cost of the video dates in the system of probation will be abolished. The announcement was made to the journalists at the meeting held in the hotel Courtyard Marriot regarding the work of the National Probation Agency in Georgia in the frameworks of the Interagency Coordination Council.

Kakhishvili spoke about the changes planned in the Probation Agency. Specifically, as he said, soon the electronic system of monitoring will be established and the people under house arrest will be controlled by the bracelets that will significantly decrease the number of prisoners in Georgia.

“There are alternative control technologies for the prisoners who committed certain crimes but should not be serving sentences inside the prison. Electronic bracelets represent one of these technologies. We are planning to establish this system in Georgia. Around beginning of October of this year, we will open a new Monitoring Center. Also, starting from March of next year we are planning to involve the social worker in the trials of juveniles. We already have a package of draft law that we will propose first to the government and then to the Parliament. According to the draft law, we will annul some of the fees established in the National Probation Agency, for instance, for video dates and transfers from one office to another,” – Kakhishvili stated and added that they are expecting more changes and the government is working on several new projects, regarding the new type of alternative compulsory measures and the pre-trial conclusions.

According to Kakhi Kakhishvili, the relevant officials will make more specific statements when the work is completed.
